The Florida State Seminoles Football Team in 2014-2015
Seminoles quarterback Jameis Winston was known as much for his off-field antics as his ability on the field. He was suspended for the Sept. 20 game against Clemson, which the Seminoles would eventually win 23-17. Although they were not always as dominant as they were a year ago, they would still go a perfect 8-0 in ACC play and a perfect 13-0 in the regular season. Florida State won its sixth game to achieve bowl eligibility by defeating Syracuse at the Carrier Dome on Oct. 11 38-20. Overall, the Seminoles won seven games by six points of fewer. However, Florida State was able to rely on its experience and superior talent to close out tough games.
In a Nov. 29 game against Florida, Winston through four interceptions, but his defense came to the rescue. A 93-yard interception return for a touchdown in the first quarter helped turn the tide in an eventual 24-19 win for the Seminoles in the Swamp. In the ACC title game, Florida State overcame 331 yards on the ground from Georgia Tech to clinch their trip to the playoffs. However, their luck would run out, and their two season undefeated streak would come to an end in a 59-20 loss to Oregon in the first round of the College Football Playoff. That would be Winston's final college game before declaring himself eligible for the NFL draft in April.
Florida has for years been a place where some of America's top college football players play for major conference and national titles. As Florida taught us this season, merely finishing the season with a winning record is not enough. With a proud traditional of being among the elite in college football, it's the national title or bust for players and fans of the Seminoles, Gators and Hurricanes.
What FSU Needs to Do to Beat Notre Dame
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish and Florida State Seminoles are going to tee it up in Doak Campbell Stadium at 8 PM Saturday, October 18. Easily the biggest test for FSU so far this year, the Irish are led by QB Everett Golson. The senior out of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina has already passed for 1,683 yards and 16 touchdowns after 6 games. FSU is going to have to figure out a way to stop the incredibly efficient Golson, who is completing 82.1% of his passes on the road this year.
His main target is sophomore William Fuller, who has notched 7 trips to the end zone on 35 catches for an average of more than 14 yards per reception this season. The aforementioned and troubled Heisman Trophy winning Jameis Winston has completed 68.2% of his passes at home, throwing for 11 touchdowns and 1,605 yards on the year, against 5 interceptions. He is going to have to consistently find leading Seminole receiver Rashad Greene to beat the Irish, who are averaging a scorching 34.5 points per game.
The Florida State Seminoles Headline Makers
Dalvin Cook made headlines this year as the talented freshman running back tallied 122 yards on 23 carries and a touchdown against Syracuse. Head coach Jimbo Fisher would no doubt mention WR Fuller as headline worthy, but no FSU player gets the press and media like QB Jameis Winston. And that is not necessarily a good thing. After being exonerated on rape charges last season and allegations that the investigation was handled improperly, Winston got caught shoplifting some crab legs earlier this year.
His most recent headline appearance alleges illegal autograph sales, and Winston was disciplined by Fisher for "shouting offensive and vulgar comments" on campus. FSU is still investigating a possible code of conduct infraction by Winston revolving around the 2012 rape accusation. Former Auburn football great Bo Jackson hails from the same hometown as Winston, Bessemer, Alabama. Jackson, widely regarded as one of the top 2 or 3 best college running backs of all time has tried to mentor the young Florida State quarterback, but recently said that he "is done" trying to help the troubled youngster.
