The Miami Hurricanes Football Team in 2014

The Hurricanes finished the season at 6-7 and concluded their year with a loss to South Carolina in the Independence Bowl. Although the season ended on a low note, the Hurricanes did have big conference wins over Duke, Virginia Tech and North Carolina. They also managed to play College Football Playoff participant Florida State to the wire. A three game winning streak in the month of October propelled Miami to their sixth victory of the season and to bowl eligibility. In a 55-34 win against Cincinnati, running back Duke Johnson passed Clinton Portis for 4th all-time on the school's rushing list.

In that game, he ran the ball 10 times for 162 yards. By the end of the season, he became the school's all-time leading rusher. Despite ending the season on a four game losing streak, Miami quarterback Brad Kaaya proved to be a bright spot for the school going forward. He set an all-time school record for a freshman in passing yards, completions and touchdown passes. Senior tight end Clive Walford emerged as a threat late in the season, with 321 yards and three touchdowns in games against North Carolina, Florida State and Virginia.

What Miami Needs to Do to Beat Virginia Tech

Virginia Tech owns the 23rd best defense in the nation when allowing points is considered. When Miami has won this year, they have average 40 points a game. They cannot expect that kind of offensive production against a stingy Va Tech defense that bends but does not break. All of Miami's losses have come on the road this season, which does not bode well for a trip to the unfriendly confines of Heinz Field.

However, the Hokies' only 2 losses this season have come at home, so Miami can pull off a huge conference victory if they get running backs Yearby and Johnson going early. And if Kaaya can find Dorsett for one of his patented long scores, pounding the ball on the ground could take momentum and time away from the Hokies. Miami is going to have to step it up on defense for the Hurricanes to pull out a tough road victory. They currently rank only 61st in the nation for points against, giving up 24.4 per game.

The Miami Hurricanes Headline Makers

As a headline maker, the 5'10" 195 pound speedster Dorsett is drawing the attention of NFL scouts. The 34.4 yards per catch average referred to earlier is more like something you would see in a video game than on a Division I football field. Lest anyone think that the senior WR is having a fluke year you need only look at 2013, when Dorsett averaged a more than healthy 20.9 yards a catch.

Al Golden is sometimes mentioned in sporting headlines as a coach in a possible hot seat scenario this year. Miami football fans expect better than a 26 - 18 record, which Golden has compiled in his 3 1/2 seasons with the Hurricanes so far. However, the coach did orchestrate a 9 - 3 season last year for 2nd place in the Coastal Division of the ACC. As a freshman RB Joseph Yearby (statistics above) is a bright spot for Miami Hurricanes football bettors. He will most likely be toting the rock for the next 2 or 3 years, and joins Junior RB Johnson to form a very powerful, clock-eating combo in the backfield for The 'Canes.
